On September 23, 2025, Rooted Realty Group will proudly host our 10th Annual First Responders Lunch—a tradition that has become one of the most meaningful events in our community. What began as a simple idea in 2015 has now grown into a cornerstone celebration of service, sacrifice, and gratitude in Kearney.
A Tradition Rooted in Gratitude
The First Responders Lunch was born during a time when our nation was struggling with division and uncertainty. Negative headlines and a growing sense of criticism toward law enforcement and first responders painted an unfair picture of the men and women who sacrifice daily for their communities. For Wendy, this was personal. She believed it was time to change the narrative—not with words alone, but with action. Her vision was to create a gathering that honored those who run toward danger when others run away, those who answer calls in the middle of the night, and those who carry the heavy responsibility of keeping our community safe.
That first year was small. The menu was simple, the setting humble, but the mission was clear: to thank, encourage, and uplift our first responders. Over the past decade, what started as one meal has grown into a community-wide celebration. Today, hundreds of first responders and their families join us each September for a day of food, fellowship, and appreciation.
Leading the Way
Rooted Realty Group was the very first to create this kind of event in Kearney. In the years that followed, other groups began hosting their own recognition events for first responders—a ripple effect that started with this lunch. While each effort has its own style and approach, we take pride in knowing that our gathering was the original spark, setting the tone for broader community recognition.
Our lunch has never been about being the biggest or the flashiest—it has always been about staying consistent, intentional, and genuine in our appreciation. For ten years, this tradition has remained rooted in gratitude and service, carried out as a team effort by Rooted Realty Group.
A Growing Celebration
Nebraska State Patrol, the Kearney Police Department, Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, the Fire Department, UNK Police, and local EMTs—all come together, not as separate departments, but as one united family. The support and turnout from these departments year after year reminds us why this tradition matters.
This year, the tradition continues with even greater excitement. We are honored to be hosting our 10th anniversary event in our new location on the Bricks. A full city block will be closed off to create the perfect space for gathering, connecting, and celebrating. Having this space allows us to welcome more people than ever before while creating a safe and festive environment.
